If you could clone one element from another city you’ve visited — a building, a cultural institution, a common street food, etc. — and bring it back to your own hometown, what would it be?
Oh, this didn’t take me any time to think about…and yet this isn’t even something I’ve ever experienced in my lifetime. However, in order to bring more community, and depend less and less on the big box and corporate America, I would love to see the revival of the General Store.
Some of you might live in small enough towns that still have these, and I congratulate you. Sadly, I don’t know of any, but in my quest of living in a simpler time and place, I feel the general store is the center of that lifestyle. It’s a way of life that if we went back to, I think we could be a happier culture. Today, the business, and greed, of life take over and we forget the community.
I’m not sure my international readers would agree here, as I think there are many more small towns and villages overseas that experience this kind of community. And maybe we could learn a lesson and go back to a way of life in which life is actually enjoyed…instead of letting it pass us by.
